    Hi, I’m Steve.

    I founded Son to create beautiful lighting products, and a company that can be a positive force in the world.

    Over the course of a decade spent developing commercial lighting for companies across North America, I fell in love with the idea that light shapes our experience of the built world. Lighting, when designed beautifully and intentionally, harnesses and enhances the impact of light on our lives and memories.

    Several years ago I realized that in order to feel whole as a designer, the products I designed needed to be manufactured ethically and responsibly, and stand for more than just making a profit. I wanted to feel prouder of the things I was making - and that meant creating something new.

    I come from a long family history of artisans and craftspeople, and I strive to instill that same ethos in Son - a company born from family building traditions, responsibly making beautiful products for the generations to come.

    Rather than creating a large product line, we want to make only a few things and make them outstanding. Growing slowly, focusing on developing and improving our core products, and striving to manufacture every component domestically and responsibly. We hope to build a customer base that shares our vision, and work closely with them to provide the best possible product and service.

    We believe lighting plays a vital role in our environments, creating and shaping our living spaces and defining the moments in our lives. The impact that lighting has on our experiences is what motivates us to produce thoughtful and intentional lighting products.

    Products continuously evolve through manufacturing improvements, new technology, and market feedback. Understanding this evolution as a core element of product design is essential to creating the best products possible.

    Less but Better

    Maintaining a limited range of products allows greater focus on continual improvement through successive generations. This approach, combined with an efficient number of total company components, allows us to sell a domestically-manufactured product at a reasonable price point.

    Customers choose a company based not only on the quality of its product, but also the integrity of the brand. At Son, we cultivate brand integrity through a clear and focused operational strategy that includes domestic manufacturing wherever possible, and an ecologically responsible approach to our product development.

    At Son, we consider a product’s ecological footprint and end-of-life through every step of production, shipping, and design. We build products for longevity, and encourage recycling and trade-in programs that reduce waste and promote long-term customer relationships.
